đ„ Hello, Again
DUMPLING evolved.
Hey, itâs Jess!
This is our first hello since DUMPLINGâs evolution into an Asia-forward Strategy and Design Practice. A lot has changed, but weâre still here for the same reason: DECODING ASIA. If youâve been following on LinkedIn, youâll have seen we designed a product: Signal Mapping Tool. Hereâs a story behind it, starting with how the map helped build the strategy for a new brand:
In fitness, everyone is glorifying the grind: push harder, AMRAP, break records. âGlorified Depletionâ is the loudest message in the category today. However, the I-Ching (æç¶) teaches us: when something is loud, its opposite starts to grow. Our Signal Mapping Tool offered a counter-force read and surfaced a growing counter-movement: âBoring Fundamentals.â Sleep. Water. Sunshine. Rest. Consistency.
And itâs quietly taking over.
BOTH is our bet on that reading: a new private programming and personal training venture I co-run with my partner. If weâre right, the counter-force wins. We built it âboringâ on purpose â»
Bye, Trend Reports.
That reading could have lived on a slide in a deck. We didnât want it to.
The design of the Signal Mapping Tool is actually a deliberate move away from Trend Reports. Reports, decks and PDFs are static, and honestly, feel a little dead, because they flatten signals into lifeless snapshots. (Iâve delivered too many of them, many âdeadâ in a clientâs drive, never surfaced again.) But trends arenât static. They live in systems. They emerge. They accelerate. They renew. They live in tension with their opposites.
The I-Ching (æç¶), one of the oldest frameworks for understanding change from ancient China, understood this thousands of years ago. Three principles come from it, and they inform how DUMPLING approaches problems:
â· WHOLE: Every part of a system is connected.
â· BALANCE: The world moves through opposing forces.
â· RENEWAL: Every ending carries the seed of what comes next.
So instead of following the status quo, we wanted to design better tools for thinking in systems, hence the Signal Mapping Tool, our attempt at a living map of signals: how they connect, oppose and evolve. The tool offers three modes, one for each principle above. The Glorified Depletion vs Boring Fundamentals reading came straight out of BALANCE mode.
With the tool, we started reading culture and markets through the lens of cyclical patterns and counter-forces, as after all, the world doesnât move in straight lines⊠Certainly not in Asia â»
Whatâs Inside
As we soft launched Signal Mapping Tool (beta), a few of you are asking about the methodology. So hereâs a quick overview about the data:
Volume â how much the map holds. The current beta runs on a curated data set. More is just noise. Curation is the work.
Variety â what the map covers. STEEP (Social, Technological, Economic, Environmental, Political) is a classic framework for horizon scanning, so we applied it, intersecting with six scales: Self, Home, Community, National, Regional, Global. STEEP tells us what kind of force is moving. The scales tell us how far it has travelled: a shift in one person's behaviour can go global. The scales are actually rooted in the Confucian concept äżźèș«ăéœćź¶ăæČ»ćăćčłć€©äž (nurture the self, align the family, govern the state, bring peace to the world).
Velocity â how signals move over time. Trends evolve, and every ending carries the seed of a new beginning. The map documents whatâs emerging, whatâs growing, and whatâs ready for renewal in the RENEWAL mode.
Veracity â how to separate signal from noise. Every signal is fact/sense-checked, scored for momentum and mapped against its counter-forces and connections. All raw research goes through the same process: curating, sense-making, scoring, mapping.
Future Readings
This newsletter is where DUMPLINGâs research continues. Each edition is a READING, covering one tension from the map (a dominant force and a counter-force), and where things might be going in Asia.
READING 01 is coming soon!
